Dr Cheyne was educated in Merseyside and studied medicine at the University of Leeds.

She trained in both general medicine and respiratory medicine in various hospitals across West Yorkshire. She joined Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2013 and was made a substantive consultant in 2015.

During her training she developed a specialist interest in Lung Cancer and is now the Lung Cancer Lead for the Trust. She is proficient in bronchoscopy, EBUS and pleural drain management. She regularly delivers courses to trainees in the region on pleural disease management and drain insertion.       

Dr Cheyne is the author of several peer-reviewed international publications. She has a research interest in the early diagnosis of lung cancer and is a principal investigator for the Trust in a number of lung cancer trials.

Dr Cheyne took up the role of Clinical Director of the Lung Optimal Pathway group in 2020.
