Who is the training is for?
The course has been designed for front line workers who are in direct contact with the public, who wish to develop or sharpen their conversational skills, and who want to improve their knowledge of basic health and well-being advice and where to signpost people to for further help.
The course can cater for large groups of participants from a mix of different service areas. The target audience includes workers who have been re-purposed to respond to COVID19, and new volunteers who have come forward to help. Wide-ranging tasks these workers deliver include: telephoning to check on vulnerable residents; arranging food parcels and prescriptions; connecting to befriending activities and signposting people coping with bereavement to appropriate services.
Contact with the public is now frequently over the telephone. Face-to-face contact must be at a safe, and unusual, social distance. COVID19 has meant that many more front-line workers are having to deal with issues that matter to people (and that can impact mental health) that are outside of their comfort zone.
Course objectives
The Good Conversations skills training supports frontline workers to Make Every Contact Count (MECC). It builds confidence, knowledge and skills required for good conversations in these very challenging times.
With its strong emphasis on core communication skills, the course also provides excellent foundation-level training for staff who may wish to engage in more specialist training in areas such as Mental Health First Aid, Domestic Violence and Motivational Interviewing.

We would like to invite you to attend a session on Tailoring conversations and building rapport, which will be held on the 16 March, 15.00-16.30
This 90 minute session for health and wellbeing coaches and care coordinators will draw on the skills and training core to these roles to build confidence in tailoring conversations and building rapport.
It will cover:
Section 1; What is at the foundation of good communication? ( we will touch upon trust/rapport/empathy/partnership)
Section 2: How can we become better listeners? (we will touch upon verbal/non verbal listening skills and anything else)
Section 3: Rethinking the questions we use to truly discover what matter to people, using theory and conversation frameworks to aid this important conversation (we will touch upon TGROW stages of change com-B, confidence ruler).
It will be presented by:
Jo McGoldrick - Jo is a Health and Wellbeing Coach Mentor for NHSE, Health Coach trainer and supervisor, as well as continuing to practice health coaching at her local GP practice
Deborah O’Nyons - Deborah is a mentor for the supported self-management team for NHSE and her background is in person centred care planning and coordination, health coaching/health coach training, leadership and management coaching.
Jim Phillips - Jim has over twenty years’ experience in the design, development and implementation of approaches that enable empowerment. He has been involved in setting up peer support groups, campaigning for better care and advising policy makers on developing person-centred care approaches and has carried a patient case load as a health coach
All health and wellbeing coaches and care coordinators are welcome to join. This session may be particularly helpful for people who are thinking about how to tailor conversations without using the Patient Activation Measure.

We can be there for your patients from day one. Blood Cancer UK Health Information Needs Webinar
I just wanted to let you know that this Friday 14 May at 12:30pm, we are hosting a free short webinar about the health information needs of people with blood cancer. This is aimed at healthcare professionals supporting people with blood cancer, predominantly nurses but also those who use or distribute our blood cancer information. It will be delivered by Blood Cancer UK and an external research specialist via Zoom.
We have been doing some in-depth research with people recently diagnosed with a blood cancer, which has given us the deepest insight we’ve had in recent years about what people need from health information. You will hear:
• how far printed blood cancer information is currently meeting people’s needs
• what printed resources would better meet people’s needs
• changes Blood Cancer UK is planning based on these insights.
Your support and input are crucial – please come and listen to the research, ask questions and give us your views. We can’t change things for the better without you.

Guy's and St Thomas' Virtual Cancer Genetics Course will teach the core concepts of risk stratification using family history as a tool to enable patients to access appropriate management strategies.
The course is designed for all healthcare professionals working in primary care and specialist settings including oncology, breast care, gynae-oncology, gastroenterology and screening services.
Participants will be equipped with the basics of cancer genetic counselling and sessions will include approaches to genetic testing, management of hereditary cancers and consent taking.

The field of breast cancer is ever advancing, with more and more treatments becoming available, resulting in better outcomes for our patients. The management of HER2 positive breast cancer in particular has taken tremendous strides over the last year or so. On this course we aim to discuss the evidence behind why we manage HER2 positive breast cancer the way we do in both the early and metastatic settings.
We also invite delegates to submit or present any challenging cases they have encountered in their own practice to reflect and share their learning with others.
Objectives
• To learn about the management of early breast cancer
• To learn about the management of metastatic breast cancer, paying particular notice to the challenging area of brain metastases
• To reflect on any difficult cases you may have come across and discuss on their management
