Right staff, right place, right time – training and development opportunities boost plans to make more cancers curable

Clinical endoscopists and reporting radiographers are being given access to new training, development and funding opportunities to boost the staffing needed to make more cancers curable in West Yorkshire and Harrogate.

Health Education England (HEE), which leads health education and training for NHS and public health staff, has developed a number of measures designed to recruit and retrain additional numbers of staff to increase capacity in the system for cancer diagnosis over the next three years.

Clinical endoscopists and reporting radiographers play an important role in obtaining images of the body’s organs and structures and using them to diagnose a range of diseases, including cancer.

As part of the NHS National Cancer Plan for England, HEE is providing support for an additional 200 clinical endoscopists over the next two years through an accelerated (seven-month) training programme. HEE is also providing support for an increase of up to 300 reporting radiographers over the same time period.

West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance – one of 19 around the country set up by NHS England to ensure the improvements in the national plan are delivered - will work closely with Health Education England to promote and support the proposals.
