Cancer patients across West Yorkshire and Harrogate have provided an encouraging response to a Cancer Alliance survey being used to improve the way care and support is built around individuals to meet their own personal needs following treatment.

The survey - which closed on 14th September - asked about people's experiences of the Recovery Package. New national guidance says that everyone diagnosed with cancer should be able to access the package by the year 2020.

The Recovery Package has four main interventions:

  • an Holistic Needs Assessment and Care Planning
  • Treatment Summary
  • Cancer Care Review
  • Health and Wellbeing Events/Support.

These elements form part of an overall support and self-management package for people affected by cancer – physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle, managing consequences of treatment, and information, financial and work support.

Becky Jowett, below, Alliance Living With and Beyond Cancer Programme Manager, thanked patients affected by a range of different cancers from across the West Yorkshire and Harrogate area who had responded to the survey.

Said Becky: "A number of the comments made by the patients have already been used to inform our work with Cancer Nurse Specialists and Cancer Care Co-ordinators. The results of the survey will also be used in a development session we are planning with a range of health professionals next month, to inform how we develop services in the future.

"We're also grateful to the patients who have kindly agreed to work with us on future work. We very much appreciate their time and their support."

A full report of the survey results will be available on the website shortly
